Distinction in the OSSA-Certification

14 April 2010. M. Rubern Chakravarthi, a final year student from Diploma in Infocomm Security Management (DISM) course, scored the distinction in the OSSA examination.

When asked about his experience, he said: "Taking the OSSA certification was definitely an eye opening experience. Over the course of 5 days, I found I learned many things about enterprise security - building a secure network, defensive tools and the 5E Attacker Methodology.

The best part about the exam was practical-based. I find that it's much easier to remember and apply the lessons learnt as one has already applied them during the practicals. Overall, I would definitely recommend taking the certification to anyone who has an interest in IT security as I believe that they would definitely be able to benefit.'

About ThinkSECURE

ThinkSecure is a Singapore-based IT security company that provides hands-on practical IT-security certification and training programmes for wireless, enterprise, penetration testing and other IT fields. It also provides security auditing and incident response services for many corporates and government organizations across the region.

OSSA-certification

14 April 2010. OSSA is the acronym for Organisational Security System Analyst (tm) certification programme from ThinkSECURE Pte Ltd which equips technical IT security specialists with the skills and capability to defend an organisation's network against internal and external threats. Singapore Polytechnic is the first polytechnic to sign an agreeement with ThinkSECURE to offer this certification to its students.

During the last March - April vacation, 15 DMIT students from Diploma in Infocomm Security Management and Diploma in Business Information Technology courses took the 5-day practical-based certification course. At the end of the course, the students underwent an intensive 4-hour hands-on practical examination.

The course took place in DMIT's Infocomm Security Labs. Each student was given access to remote virtual machines, provided by ThinkSECURE, which simulate a real-life enterprise-class network system in a typical organisation. The remote servers were provided by ThinkSECURE. The entire environment provides a platform for the students to hone their IT security skills and look at information security from a professional perspective. During the OSSA certification examination, students are required to demonstrate and apply actual practical skills in dealing with IT security threats.

All 15 students eventually passed the examination. 4 students scored above 80% and 1 student was given a distinction for scoring above 90%! The results show that our students are well trained and are as ready as the professionals to work in the IT security industry.

Mr Julian Ho, Director of ThinkSECURE, concurs: "Singapore Polytechnic students who passed this gruelling practical examination have proven that they have both the technical skills and also the practical ability to apply those skills, both of which are the qualities expected of today's competent, technical IT-security professional, and we believe that they will be valuable contributors to the private- and public- sector organizations who employ them".
