Failing Forward Student Workshop Run #2

The first session of the Failing Forward Student Workshop Run #2 was conducted on Wednesday afternoon, 23 July 2014 at the SPACE Cube @ The Agency. We saw students coming from the 3 schools in BIH cluster came together to learn about the topic of resiliency.

These students started the programme by making a paper plane. This was an interesting exercise for the students to kick-start the programme. In a group of two, the students needed to make a paper plane using one quarter of an A4 size paper. The process required the students to work very closely and attempt to fly the paper plane with a distance of greater than 3 metres. It seemed easy but not all students succeeded with one single attempt but multiple attempts. The morale of the story was to encourage the students to keep trying till they succeed, i.e., with perseverance.

It's your turn to fold the paper plane.
Please show me how to do it!

Let me try flying the plane...
Even when I am sitting, my paper plane can fly....

Let it fly... up.. up.. and.. away........
It's my turn now..

Me too... let it go...
Like those students in the first run of the programme, they were also required to balance an egg with end. Students were anxious to try on the balancing act but struggle very hard to make it with a success.
I told you I can do it, didn't I.

We are trying....

Steady lah!!!
Students participated in the programme had learnt about the concept of failing forward. We hope the programme will the students to develop a positive attitude and proactive view (“dare to try” mindset) to foster resilient lifelong learning.

These students enjoyed the workshop and hopefully they were able to take away some learning points through the workshop. Happy learning!!!

Failing Forward Student Workshop Run #1

The first session of the Failing Forward Student Workshop Run #1 was conducted on Wednesday afternoon, 9 July 2014 at the SPACE Cube @ The Agency. This is a BIH cluster initiative to teach students on the topic of resiliency.

The programme aims to provide learners with the key understandings of the perception of failure and necessary skills to respond to failure. The programme will initially make students aware of how people generally respond to “fear of failing”, the important traits of achieving people, key factors influencing their ways of responding to failure (e.g. personal traits, individual dispositional attributes, emotions, mindset, environment, etc.) and how to overcome failure to fail forward successfully.

Learners will then learn a range of specific strategies and techniques to enhance their thinking and learning through reflective practice, manage their emotions and develop a positive attitude and proactive view (“dare to try” mindset) to foster resilient lifelong learning.

We hope that the students will reap the benefits by attending the workshop and inculcate the "dare to try" spirit in them so that they are able to equip themselves with the skillset to failing forward successfully.

Let's get started.
Thinking hard?

How to make an egg stand on end?
I am holding it with my finger, am I smart?
Yes, I did it.

Me too!!!
A sense of victory.
Let's write our ideas on the wall.....

NISEC 2014 Zero Day Defence Competition

3 Jul 2014. The National Infocomm Security Competition 2014 - Zero Day Defence Competition has successfully ended. Conducted from 18 to 20 June 2014, twenty-three teams from Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University had participated in this competition.

The participating teams went through a three-day boot camp, with round-the-clock training, web application development and penetration challenge.

Team Burden (National University of Singapore),
Members - Yeo Quan Yang*, Ang Ming Yi*, Low Yong Jin Jaryl
NS: * denotes DISM Alumni
The final round of the competition was the Penetration Challenge, which tests the teams’ skills in performing reconnaissance and penetration within a short duration of 3 hours. Many teams came prepared with their suite of vulnerability scanning tools, which were instantly executed once the clock starts ticking. Code injection to the form fields which did not perform validation checks was also a common tactic used by several teams to compromise the web applications. The teams have to compromise opponent teams’ web applications and even their backend server for points to be awarded.  Source: www.gosafeonline.sg

Team Burden from NUS eventually emerged as the winning team for the NISEC 2014 Zero Day Defence Competition.

Quan Yang and Ming Yi are DISM alumni and we are happy for their achievement in the competition. We hope this will inspire our DISM students to continue to strife for betterment in their studies as well as IT security competitions.
