Rising cyberspace threat boosts demand for security services - ChannelNewsAsia.com

Singapore’s cyberspace threat exposure is at 41 per cent, higher than the global average of 36 per cent according to security software firm FireEye. This had led to higher demand for cybersecurity services.

The increased demand has led SP to double its intake for its Diploma in Infocomm Security Management course from 40 to 80. SP also makes sure its students do not abuse the knowledge acquired during training as students are made to sign an agreement to use the knowledge lawfully.

Students are also reminded of cyberwellness and ethical use and the course modules cover the Computer Misuse Act, as well as field trips to the State Courts, High Court and prison.

Advancing the fight against cyber threats @ Govware 2014 - hometeam.sg

23 Sep 2014. GovernmentWare 2014 brought a diversity of innovations designed to combat modern-day cyber threats and viruses. A developing, growing range of cyber threats also means the continuous need to advance technology. This year’s GovernmentWare (Govware) showcases up-to-date innovations of major private companies as well as schools that equip our devices to combat online threats. Singapore Polytechnic (SP) produced three creations, one of which is a malicious software (malware) detection website named “Open Bouncer”. Part of students Reuben Tan’s, Ngoh Guang Wei’s, Russell Chua’s and James Teoh’s Final Year Project (FYP) in collaboration with the University of Victoria, the Open Bouncer is an open platform to detect Android malware. Singapore Polytechnic students show Open Bouncer to Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Cyber Conquest @ Govware 2014

On 23rd September, the first day of Governmentware 2014 saw youth participants competing in scenario-based challenges that tested their proficiency in IT security at the 5^th Singapore Cyber Conquest.

 

For this year's Govware Singapore Cyber Conquest event, the Ministry of Home Affairs has partnered with Boeing, root9B, HP, and Ixia - an intense capture the flag competition that will challenge the team to think more like an attacker and improve the defensive skills.

 

 

 

 

We hope our DISM students had a good time being exposed to the competition being part of a red-team operational unit tasked with assessing the overall security posture of the opnet.com network to uncover target vulnerabilities, and gain access to the systems where applicable.

 

GovernmentWare 2014

On 23 September 2014, participants from the public and private sectors convened at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre for the 23rd GovernmentWare infocomm security seminar and exhibition to learn about the latest challenges in IT security.

The Guest-Of-Honour was Mr. Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs.

In his opening speech, he indicated the complexity of having the complete visibility or oversight of the environment. “We have to build robust information and intelligence sharing channels which we can tap on to put in place effective early warning systems. Such systems will enable us to better prepare against cyber attacks.”

He also mentioned how government to work with private, education sectors to fight cyber threats. "For example, in January this year, KPMG set up a Cyber Security Centre in partnership with the Infocomm Development Authority and Singapore Polytechnic. The Centre brings together companies, institutes of higher learning and security technology vendors to build capabilities and drive innovation in cyber security."

MCI Scholarships Award Ceremony 2014

SINGAPORE: Fifty-five recipients were awarded the Ministry of Communications and Information scholarships at a ceremony on Thursday (Aug 21).

 

Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim, who was at the presentation ceremony, said more ideas are needed to make Singapore a SMART Nation. He said the expertise that the scholars will gain and the information collected will create new products and services to make Singapore a better place for all.
